to my best friend tose Best Friends for Ever At the bottom of a garden, in a small Scottish town, there lived, side by side, two flowers. One of the flowers was called Rose and she was very beautiful. Every day she would wake up, give a really loud yawn and her petals would open. Then she would talk all day about how beautiful she was and how pretty she was and how unfortunate it was that the other flowers were not as lucky as she was! The birds were very tired of listening to her and even the honey bees avoided her as she kept telling them, at every given opportunity, that she was as sweet, even sweeter, than their honey and how she was invited to sing at all the garden festivals. She had sung at the ladybird’s wedding, the centipede’s birthday party, the beetles’ anniversary, and had been the star attraction at the Thistles New Year party!! She went on and on and on. Her voice, not as sweet as she thought, would ring throughout the garden and out into the woods where the robins and sparrows were hiding! When evening came she informed everyone that she would now be going to sleep and she would see them all in the morning and if they were very lucky she would sing her favourite song to them. Rose singing The other flower was very different to Rose. Her name was Blue-belle. She was also very pretty. Blue-belle would awake in the morning and gently dance with the breeze. She said a quiet hello to all the birds and insects around her and they liked her. This troubled Rose very much. She showed her dislike by singing out loud, driving away Blue-belle’s friends. This upset Blue-belle and she would try to hide this by only crying when it rained so no-one would see her tears. One day the sun rose high in the sky. It was a very warm summer morning. The sort of morning Rose loved as all the insects and animals would be out playing and she would have an instant audience. Rose tried to stretch and yawn loudly but nothing happened. She tried again, even harder. Nothing! She tried even harder, so hard that she woke Blue-belle. ‘Is anything wrong Rose?’ asked Blue-belle. ‘No!’ was Rose’s quick reply. ‘I’m fine…just a little tired after all my beautiful singing last night.’ Blue-belle knew something was wrong. Rose always awoke, stretched, yawned and talked and sang non stop from very early in the morning to very, very late at night. Blue-belle waited a little while but Rose still hadn’t moved. Her petals still stuck by her side and her voice wasn’t as clear as it normally was. Rose tried to move again but it was no use. She was stuck. Rose had never been stuck in her life and she didn’t know how to ask for help. Blue-belle knew this. She asked Rose if she wanted some help. ‘No thank you’ said Rose ‘I am very capable of dealing with this situation thank you very much’. Time passed. Blue-belle was becoming very concerned as she knew that Rose needed the sunlight to keep her healthy and something needed to be done. Blue-belle called out to her friends. As she had a very quiet voice no-one heard her over the noise of the insects and the birds that were playing tag. She called out again. Still no one heard her so she decided that in order to be heard she had to do something she had never done before. She sang. Before she knew it the song was out of her mouth and into the air. When they heard the beautiful sound, every animal and insect in the garden stopped suddenly and grew silent. They all looked frozen. Blue-belle’s voice was beautiful. Rose could not believe it. It was very different to her voice and she didn’t like to admit it but it did sound really nice! Blue-belle stopped singing. All the animals ‘unfroze’ and came running. ‘Blue-belle that was amazing’ they called. ‘Wow!’ they said. Blue-belle was embarrassed and thanked them in her soft voice. She then talked loudly. So loud it frightened her and everyone else. ‘Sorry’ she said. ‘Now I need your help’. ‘Rose is stuck and she needs to be unstuck… will you help her? All the animals and insects were quiet. They remembered all the horrible things Rose had said about them and her incessant talking and not very good singing. They were still very quiet. Just then the smallest of the ants spoke out. ‘I think we should help her as she needs help and it could have happened to any one of us.’ ‘I agree’ said one worm. ‘Yes let’s do it’ said the spiders. Soon everyone was running around trying to help. ‘We need water’ said Blue-belle and the ants went to get that. ‘We also need a bit of cloth’ she added so the beetles went to get that. Slowly the water washed away the stickiness on Rose’s petals and carefully the beetles washed her so that she was able to stretch out gradually and feel the heat and comfort of the sun. Rose had never said thank you in her life. It was very difficult for her. She tried and for the first time ever she couldn’t say what she wanted to say. She tried again ‘Than…k…you Blue-belle and to everyone else’. Everyone cheered. Rose began to cry. She was sorry she had caused so much trouble in the garden and promised to be nicer and kinder and not to talk and sing as much and to listen to others. She then looked straight at Blue-belle. ‘I’ve been very selfish and I’m sorry. You didn’t have to help but you did. Your voice is very beautiful and so are you.’ She turned to all the animals. ‘You are all beautifully different!’ Everyone cheered and wiped away the odd tear. Can we be friends Blue-belle…best friends for ever? ‘Yes Rose. Of course we can be friends’…and to this day they are still the best of friends. If you ever visit this little Scottish town and find yourself at the bottom of a lovely garden just listen. You may just hear the singing of Rose and Blue-belle carried on the wind….

It sweeps up everything around us in a kind of blind rush, moving and eroding patterns before we can catch our bearings. By the time it has passed — a month, a year, a relationship — it’s hard to even tell what has actually happened. And it isn’t until things have settled back down, into a place where they can be recognized and counted, that we start to feel the full weight of what has changed. Time with you was a burst of wind, and when I think of it, from memory alone I want to pull my sweater tighter around me. I can’t say exactly what makes certain people more difficult than others, but there are undeniably those we love who refuse to fit into any shape we could possibly cut out for them. Their whole being seems frustrating, elusive, incompatible. And with you, there was always a palpable difficulty. I was a child again, playing with my wooden block toys, attempting to insert a triangle block into a square-shaped cut-out. It never fit, and yet I didn’t possess the perspective or the self-confidence to understand that the shapes simply didn’t coincide. For so long, I wondered what I was doing wrong, trying over and over again to make the impossible happen. You taught me many things about myself, about what it means to love and care even in the face of cold indifference. There were glimpses of compassion and understanding, sure, but I have no doubts as to the dynamics of our interactions. I was always chasing, and you barely had to move to stay out of my reach. Those moments of affection, without which the whole ordeal would have seemed worthless, became like tiny flecks of gold found in near-endless piles of soot and rubble. If I could only keep digging, I thought, I would eventually uncover something beautiful — something I needed to believe existed between us. I never did, of course. There was never a deeper level to our story than what you allowed on the surface. In that way, I admit that you were decent. You were up-front, and never explicitly promised more than you would ultimately be prepared to give. It was almost entirely me, weaving elaborate tapestries of double-speak and hidden meanings that spelled out only the things I wanted to hear. There was nothing I couldn’t misinterpret for my own desire, my own need to be needed by someone in whom I invested so deeply. But the wind blew past us, the summer over more quickly than I’d ever seen one go before. There was a moment we were sitting on a porch, listening to cicadas and talking about keeping in touch, and then it was gone. Our hands were touching, and then they weren’t. If I had known that moment would be over so soon, I would have probably said goodbye then. I would have liked to go out with a little dignity, a little closure — not drawn out over months of barely speaking, of me attaining perpetually higher limits of humiliation in my refusal to accept the truth. To have confronted your unavailability head-on would have been a ripping off of the emotional band-aid, one I only thought I wanted to spend the cool autumn months gently tugging at. We didn’t speak; we didn’t keep in touch. For a long time, I remained convinced that this period of distance was a strange emotional coma from which you would suddenly awake. You would tell me that you were sorry to have been so weird, that you had always loved me, that I had always been right. I suppose I have watched enough movies in my life to believe that no story, if unsatisfying, is ever at its very end. The tiny flame of hope that this may all have been a petulant phase in your otherwise limitless capacity for love and understanding was perhaps more painful than the harsh finality of your disinterest. To keep grasping at ever-slimmer chances of a happy ending was frustrating, and then ridiculous, and then profoundly sad. I would have liked to just go straight to sad. After our time flew past me, the passing of months and years became more soft, more understandable. Time once again resembled the lazy river that it had always been, not catching me in its refusal to slow down and let me breathe. The months turned into years, and every last bit of dust from our strange little hurricane had settled. My thoughts of us had become — have become — tiny vignettes that pass in front of my eyes only when faced with a direct reference to you. And they no longer carry a sting, or a turn of the stomach, or even a remote desire to reach out. Life is better (as I had always imagined it might be) when I am surrounded by people of whose love I am completely sure. I will not forget you, though. I don’t think that you particularly deserve my memory, nor do I flatter myself into believing that you return my sense of vague wistfulness. There is no part of me that wants to return to the limbo I existed in for so long, or even the often-imagined parallel universe in which you reciprocated my feelings to the letter. I do, however, want to remember what it feels like to be hurt, to want, to need something so desperately only to find out that your life is perfectly fine without it. As much as the little scar on my knee will always remind me to watch out when I am running, yours on my heart will teach me to be kind. Because I know what it feels like to be cast aside with indifference, and I know that it’s a pain from which the body itself takes a long time to recover. You will live in my mind as a cautionary tale, a fable of how much damage words can do — especially when they are insincere. And though I am not nostalgic for what we did have, I am hopeful about life being filled with everything we didn’t.

dear tose i just went to say i love and miss u sooooooooooooo much i will never going to forget you Last year I had the opportunity to travel alone for the first time. I went to Texas, where I spent a month at my cousin’s house where I discovered the meaning of a real trip and what you can learn from it. First, I met a guy, his name was Ângelo. His was from Angola and has been living there for some weeks. He was a nice guy ,we turn into friends very quickly. But what called my attention was his ideoly. He and his younger brother moved to the States to have a better life and educacional conditions without their family. And they were always talking care of each other, helping and trying to do everything together. When I asked him what he was feeling about that, he told me that it was ok. He knew that would make him a better profissional and his dream was to be a cardiologist,because he was borned with a heart disease. At first, it seemed to me a little dramatic as in the movies. But then I realize that people are doing this all the time! Some are fearless enough to leave everything behing and follow their dreams. And that was when I realized that I wanted to be like that! Drop off my little box and start looking for real life changes! Many inspiring stories were happening and I could be part of something. I decided to get closer to him and everyday I used to wait for him to come from school and we walked and talked a lot aroud the Park and do some funny things. We had a lot of fun! I really made a real friend and at the same time I helped him in that dificult situation. He helped me with english and teached me a lot! We talk every week and plan some future trips to amazing places. I was really grateful to have met him

For the last two years of my life, I have been through so many different stages, like graduating, falling out with friends, a new school, and through all of the good and bad times, you have been with me. I couldn't thank you enough for that. To me, it is so important for your friends to be proud of you when you get a new job, learn something new, or just accomplish big things. But it's also really important for your friends to just be proud that you got out of bed that day, so today, January 7, I am so proud of you for waking up and just having a day! I want you to know, I don't need a large group of friends when I have one that constantly reminds me all of the time that they are there for me in every way possible. I thought my whole life that I knew what a best friend was, but I was wrong. You've given those words a whole different meaning. Nobody could ever compare to you. I used to think a best friend was sleep overs, reckless activities, and spending every day together. I was wrong. A best friend is not seeing them all the time and still being so close it blows your mind, or getting so excited to see the other one when it might have only been a day that you've been apart, being able to call them at any time of day because you need them, feeling like you always have someone in your corner. Or just you, you are a best friend. Having you as my best has made every individual day better. And I hope to never lose that. If for any reason, we ever fight about something, and I mean really fight about something, I will always want to fix it. I hope you stay around for a long time, because I want you in my life forever. Dear Best Friend, tose I hope this letter finds you on a day that is filled with excitement for the future. You’re leaving for college and I could not be more thrilled for you. I’m not sure if we’re as close as we were this time last year, but I understand that things have changed in our friendship, and that’s okay. We always hear about people losing touch with their best friends but never think it will happen to us. I’m not sure what exactly caused our subtle drift apart, though I believe the distance and lack of communication that began when I went off to school played a hand in it. We go weeks – sometimes even months – without talking and I used to miss you so much when when that happened, but to be honest, it never seemed like you missed me. And because of that, I guess I stopped missing you. When I look through pictures of the two of us, it’s bittersweet. I miss the connection we used to have, back when I knew everything about your life without having to pry for information. There are a million and one ways to contact you (thanks to social media), but I still have no idea what’s going on in your life or what the stories are behind the pictures you post. Now it seems all we’re left with is the occasional “How are you?” text, and “Happy Birthday” message, and less-than-promising plans to catch up with each other. Our friendship is a big part of what made me who I am. I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true. When we first became friends, I clung on to that friendship with a death grip. But slowly, I started to feel comfortable enough to open up to you and was able to begin evolving into my own person. Most of my favorite memories I was privileged to experience with you by my side. And there are times when, for a brief moment, it feels like nothing has changed between us and all of the memories I hold so dearly happened days ago. But more often than not, it feels like I’m viewing someone else’s moments and memories; things I’m unfamiliar with. We’ve drifted apart more than I ever thought we would. And while I’ve made a few friends here and there since going to college, I’ve yet to feel as close to any of them as I used to feel with you. The purpose of this letter isn’t to make you sad. It’s quite the opposite, actually. This letter is my way of telling you that while I’m immensely saddened by the fact that we’ve drifted apart from the best friends we used to be, I’ve accepted it. And I’m filled with so much gratitude for the joy you’ve provided me with over the years. The advice and moral support and happiness you added into my life is invaluable to me. I’m so happy that you’re about to go off to college and live that part of your life. You’ll make so many wonderful friends, while simultaneously finding out more about yourself than you ever thought possible. Even when you feel like you’re going to scream because the people on the floor above you are making a ruckus at three a.m. that’s keeping you awake or you’re a mess of tears because you miss home terribly, it will be worth it. Because you are worth it. Life is going to happen for you. And you’re going to be amazing. Because you matter. You exist. And you can do anything you set your mind to. You are a force to be reckoned with and that is a crazy, beautiful thing. I want to thank you for being the brilliant person you are and for making such an impact on my life. I wish you nothing but the best in your new life at college. And while it breaks my heart a little bit to know that the distance between us will inevitably increase, I know that things will be wonderful for you. You are going to change the lives of everyone you meet in the years to come. Because I don’t think anyone can meet you and not be taken aback by your unbridled enthusiasm and unfettered passion for life. An Open Letter To My Friend Who Passed Away Things I never had the chance to say to tose my best friend To my friend who passed away, I want you to know that I think of you every day. I want you to know that I miss you more than anything, and I would give anything to talk to you one last time. I still remember the last time that I saw you. You were leaving for home, and I begged you not to leave. I told you that I would miss you so much and that I knew it would be a while until I saw you again. For some reason, when I hugged you, I felt like it would be the last time I saw you. Looking back now, I wish I would have spent more time with you, shared more stories with you, and made more memories. X You were the happiest person I knew. I only saw you upset one time in your whole life, and every other time you were smiling the brightest smile I've ever seen. I look at old pictures and videos I have saved of our memories, but it's just not the same, but I know you are happy still. Although it is cliché, I know you are in a better place. This year has been so hard for me, and so much has happened, but I know you have guided me in the right direction. Somehow, you still influence my life, even if you aren't here. I can't even count the amount of times I needed to talk to you, to call you, because you were the only person I knew would understand my problems or situations I was going through. I was lucky enough to not experience the death of a loved one until you left my life, but losing someone as precious and perfect as you was the hardest thing I ever had to deal with. All of my accomplishments and achievements since that day have been because of you because I constantly ask myself what you would do whenever I am faced with a tough situation. I know if you were here you would say I am being ridiculous for being so sad, you would laugh at me and tell me to be positive, and you would drive me around in your car, blasting music. There is a song that came out a few months after you left, and I know you would have loved it so much. I wish I would have been able to show it to you. I'm also sorry for never painting the canvas you wanted, but I painted one a few months ago anyway because I know you would've wanted me to. I wish I had all the pictures of us that you hoarded on your phone, and I wish I could remember that one thing I said that made you spit out your water across the room. Like Odyssey on Facebook I want you to know that I remember your laugh, your stories, and your tattoo. I remember the way we felt when we realized we were the same person when we decided to be each others bridesmaids, and when we were nervous for the first day of college. So many people say that they have the absolute best friend but I know that cannot be true, because the very best one is mine. It's not very common to find someone who hates you at first, but develops into the person that means more to you than any other. And you are that person for me.
