I met Albert in 1988 when I was in my first few months as Artistic Director of St Martins Youth Arts Centre in South Yarra and he was Precentor at St Paul's Cathedral... we approached him with the idea of performing the Wakefield Mystery Plays in the Cathedral as a pre Christmas event... he was not only enthusiastic about the idea, he gave me his own copy of the plays to work from... as it turned out, Albert had been an actor at The Little Theatre which predated my tenure at St Martins... in the years before my time, a distance had grown between the old actors, directors, designers and others from 'The Little' days, and the young people and staff of its new incarnation... Albert gave us very generous access to the Cathedral and we performed there very successfully two years running... in that same period, Albert and others from 'The Little' days worked with us at St Martins to welcome back those for whom the place had been as formative in their acreers as it still is today in the beginnings of our future artists... some of my most treasured memories of my time at St Martins are the handful events that brought the 'old crowd' into contact with the young people for celebrations of what had been and what would be to come... and, of course, the outrageous stories Albert had to tell of his theatre days... the last time I saw Albert was at St Martins 30th Birthday celebration last year where many of that old crowd gathered together under the peppercorn tree in the carpark where we had laid to rest the ashes of Irene Mitchell a good ten or fifteen years before. And, of course, Albert had conducted the memorial for that event... he was a lovely man... warm and cheeky and funny and spiritual and astute and intelligent and, above all, a friend to the two great congregational rituals; the theatre and the church... I am priviledged to have known him, I will think fondly of him always... and, like many, will miss him... vale Albert... CHRIS THOMPSON FORMER ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ST MARTINS YOUTH ARTS CENTRE

Canon Albert McPherson was a friend and a strong presence to me and many of my colleagues here at the ABC. In 2002 and 2003 he presented a series of ANZAC DAY and EASTER talks which were broadcast nationally on ABC Local Radio. I listened to them recently and found them quite wonderful. So witty, strong, warm and intellectually stimulating. Just like the man I knew. Rest in peace Albert. Gary Bartholomew Producer / Broadcaster ABC Local Radio

Albert was always so pleased to us, and the feeling was mutual. From many years at the Victorian Arts Centre to fantastic dinner parties, Albert was a friend who will be sadly missed. Adrian Kennedy and Stephen Smith
