Extract from "The Bondi Surfer" 3 August 2011: GENERAL CLUB NEWS JOHN ALEXANDER HUGHES It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of veteran member, John Alexander Hughes last Sunday, 31st July 2011 at the age of 89 years. John joined Bondi SBLSC in 1939 at the age of 17 and shortly after gaining his Bronze Medallion, he enlisted in the A.I.F. Upon his return from duty John held the following positions in the club: Club Captain – 1949-50 and 1950-51 Secretary – 1951-52 (wrote an article in the first edition of the ‘Bondi Surfer’) Treasurer - 1952-53 and 1953-54 John also received the John F. Cox Memorial Trophy in 1947-48.
I met John and nita in 1980 very dearly loved many memories and stories of how he learnt to drive he will be sadly missed.
I met John in 1968, via a common friend, and the first thing that impressed me was his ability to sink a beer at Bob Hawke speed and have another while he waited for you to catch up. That was to be the first of many things which impressed me about John, I list but a few: - his caring for others - his devotion to his wife - his love for computing - his capacity for deep and lateral thought - his enjoyment of arguing - his penchant for large packets of jelly beans - his ability to go without sleep - the enormous amounts of sugar he had in hot drinks - his scary driving and perhaps most of all, his loyalty as a friend. He will be missed.
