So much has happened this past year and you are still in my thoughts, as ever. I've got some great photos of Olivia and Max when they were up here at New Year, you'd be surprised how big and sophisticated they are (but then again, maybe not). They remain delightful company, especially at the dining table or floor, full of life, jokes and gossip. Children have the best gossip as they tend not to censor themselves as we grown-ups do. ...you'd be loving it here now. I've just had a sample of the tributes to Jeremy and I'm weeping in front of the screen and laughing about the lizard lunch (Andrew Heggie's memory April 2010). The political events of the past three weeks would have him enraptured, expounding and ever entertaining. I talk to Jez nearly every day in my head and his voice, laugh and face come through loud and clear, it's an ongoing conversation. I miss him so much and would love to have him back, just for an afternoon, how much we'd have to talk about. But how can one stop at one afternoon. This is all rather fanciful but love never dies, one day I might stop being angry with him for leaving us all. The world just isn't the same place without him. I am the proud godmother of Olivia Kate, his first born ( I was live @ the event) and share a birthday with Max, the young rascal in training and of course dear friend and ally of Genevieve. I was fortunate to call myself a mate of Jez's during our time together at St Aloysius College. We lived not far from each other and caught the train home together regularly. We often “hung out” in the streets of Greenwich and Wollstonecraft getting up to no good. He was so easy-going and entertaining. During the holidays we shared numerous camping trips to beaches up and down the NSW coast including Bendalong / Gerringong / Seven Mile Beach – which was somewhere near to where his family had a holiday house I think. On one trip to Burning Palms, Jez ran out food and I recall he caught, killed, cooked and ate a lizard, professing that it “tastes just like chicken” He had it all to himself! My Mum used to do secretarial work at our home for Mr Vermeesch, Jez's dad, who was always creating some new legal tome. I remember clearly Jez's wacky sense of humour, cheeky grin and the "EH" days. (read Michael McGirr's tribute at the top of this page). “EH” became an “I was here” for Jez. I remember also clearly Jez's dietary challenges. His Mum (Margaret) used to make him sandwiches with bread made with rice flour because he could not eat wheat. I always thought they looked so dull and lifeless. I wanted to offer him my sandwiches but he could not eat them. My wife is a Coeliac too but back then it was completely foreign to me. I was asthmatic and Jez was too. We both used to take an asthma spray medication call “Alupent” What struck me however was that none of that was an issue with Jez. Life went on and his boundless optimism and enthusiasm combined with that cheeky smile will remain with me. I am sorry I lost contact with Jez but it has been moving and inspiring to read the words of all of those who have enjoyed sharing their lives with him since those days in the 70's. I would have liked to known the man he became. Rest in peace Jez and thank you.

I have indelible memories of Jez. The memories take me to deep places. I have been thinking about them a lot. Thanks Marty for inspiring me to share them. My first clear recollection is in Year 8, 1975. He was giving a presentation to the class and turned and wrote a single syllable, EH, on the board. This was the start of the EH phenomenon at school, a two letter protest movement. The word embodied an entire philosophy of life: ironic, comic, satiricial, wise, questioning, cryptic. Jeremy was a kid of both lightness and depth. EH became a kind of salute in our class. The fall of the Whitlam Government was a major crisis for Jez. I remember in Year 9, 1976, coming back from the city on a train. He spotted Gough’s speech writer, Graham Freudenberg, in the carriage. For Jez, it was like seeing a movie star. I didn’t know who the hell Freudenberg was. I don’t know that too many 14 or 15 year olds would have. Jez explained all about Freudenberg and the CIA and other stuff I needed to know. In Year 11, 1978, we did the Walk Against Want together. You could choose 20km or 30km. I thought 20km would be plenty but Jez wanted to do the longer route. We spent the whole day discussing politics. Uranium mining was a big part of it. But Jez was the first person I ever saw wearing a ‘land rights for gay whales’ badge. He could be ironic about himself too. His passion for justice was genuine. He was the guy I always wanted to waste time talking to. It was never a waste. He took me to places beyond my narrow world. I can recall sitting next to Paul Foster, our English teacher, going through an essay. He was marking one of Jez’s while I waited. Jez’s handwriting went in all directions at once. Paul gave him an A and mentioned (which perhaps he should not have) that he had never known a student to do it so easily. Jez was not a guy who needed to be bored. He didn’t much like religion but had great relationships with priests. He loved Boris McEvoy who taught us Latin and Tony Walsh, our Year 12 form master. They were both radical non-comformists. They lit something in him. He was the only guy in Year 12 who wanted to do both Ancient History and Biology. This says something about his voracious mind, a hungry intellect. He kept at Fr Bruce to change the timetable to make this subject choice possible. He believed in structural change even then. He was good to me when my dad died in Year 12. He told me his dad was a writer. I remember that. He sounded proud. We lost contact after Year 12. I only now realise how sorry I am about that. We chose different paths. I went off to join the Jesuits and I became afraid that my life’s choice would put a wall between us which would have been painful. I was too afraid to put it to the test. I suspect I needn’t have worried. But I did. Silly me. I missed him long before he died. I have just dug out the menu from our valete dinner, October 18, 1979. I am looking at Jeremy’s signature. Something strikes me as odd. Then I realise. He has misspelt his own name. Michael McGirr

I first met Jez around 1970, when we both became prisoners at St Aloysius College. Over the years I got to know and like him more and more. He had a great and Dadaesque sense of humour, for example muttering in Science one day that the teacher was a 'muffin' and a 'cupcake', and sending me into hysterics. In a school ruled by Rugby fanatics, Jez was a shining light of gentleness. He had a refreshing lack of interest in football and competition, although he enjoyed wagging study periods to talk and play basketball. He was a great student of Latin (completing 3 unit Latin for his HSC), and no doubt this contributed to the deep understanding of language that underpinned his writing. Although intellectual, Jez was also quietly rebellious. He was part of a group that scared, alarmed, intrigued and excited me - they met before school at a cafe and smoked cigarettes, they took off their ties on the way home. They went away on surfing holidays and shared joints. They seemed to be anti authority in general and the school in particular. Some were very left wing and had fewer hangups about sex. They seemed to walk the line, and one was expelled. I'm pleased to say now that I occasionally raided my brother's secret cigarette stash and joined them at that cafe, to share in that underground frisson and try to understand what the hell they were on about. Having finished school, Jez and I occasionally met in the eighties before losing touch. I next met Jez around 1992, after uni, travel, and immersion in protest movements and communes had opened my eyes a little. I was finally catching up politically with Jez. We spent a great evening in his bohemian Newtown digs, talking about the Erskineville 'peoples park' protest nearby (the park is still there, saved from the developers), and about his coverage of the treatment of asylum-seekers (which was way ahead of his time). He was passionate about his work and life in general, although a fainting spell indicated that even then he was working and living too hard. I last spoke with Jez last year. It was 30 years since we'd left school, and, as a recovering Catholic, I wasn't sure I wanted to attend the official reunion, so I was organising an alternative reunion/surf trip. Jez was someone I definitely wanted to catch up with. Fortunately, I was able to track him down through a mobile number on an old AWU press release on the web. Once again, we had a great rave, covering a wide range of political topics, including some of the characters we knew in common, such as our former schoolmate Joe Hockey. Jesuit schools are said to produce people who are either very radical or very conservative. Hockey and Tony Abbott are examples of the latter, upholding the status quo. Jez was an example of the former - a free-thinker who was dedicated to social change, egalitarianism and a fair go for all. He was kind, generous and thoughtful. I never met his children, but I know he would have been a great father. News of his death was an enormous shock to his mates from the class of 79. As a small child, I will never forget being on the steps of the church outside my grandfather's funeral. My grandmother, summing up all that was good about him, said to me: 'He was a gentle man'. Jez Vermeesch was a gentle man, a scholar and someone who dedicated his life to making the world a better place. I can't believe he has gone. Like so many others who were touched by him, I will miss him terribly. My condolences to Genevieve, Olivia and Max, and all his family and comrades. Marty

Found these photos of Jez. We were all young and beautiful then, smoking a million cigarettes and drinking beer from long neck bottles. It wasn't until years later that I realized I'd been keeping such exceptionally clever, humorous and special company. Jeremy, may your soul travel on in peace. Lea

Great conversationalist particularly on politics, great wit. But more than that incredibly kind, generous and caring particularly to friends who were struggling. You will me much missed. Miriam
