Photos From Kaka Point
My mate Hone has a helluva way with words
but he’s not such a hot shot
with a camera.
Look at these –
Five or six assorted images
definitely not works of art.
Beheaded, de-feeted,
‘the shoot first, ask questions later’ school of photography
Turn them over though,
scribbled on the backs,
explanations,captions
undiluted essence of Tuwhare.
Perhaps he wanted me to have the visual poems,
and I do appreciate the photos –
really, truly.
I can pin them on my wall
or click them onto the door of the fridge
with those little Kitschen magnets
and read them at a glance,
‘cause most of the poems he writes
are far too long
to read off the fridge door
as I’m making a grab for the milk.

His poems were an inspiration when I was young...and still are. No pomp, frippery or self promotion. But a quiet strength, earthiness and a passionate talent for words. I miss him though I didn't even know him.

New Zealand has lost a national treasure. He mihi atu ki te taonga o nga kupu! Moe mai ra te rangatira me te kauri o Te Ao Tuhituhi!
