By the time our two girls Kate and Claire were born in the late 90's, Fen was well into his 70's and an elderly grandfather. So he didn't kick the ball round in the garden with them or take them roller-skating. But when I asked them today what they remembered most about Fen, they said his big, strong hugs. When they were little, his hugs would take them into the air and when they grew older the hugs were no less strong but perhaps with less altitude. He was also pleased to see them. laugh with them, share their delight when they found something interesting and love them in his own gentle way. Once up at Seymour, Fen, Adam and I took the girls for a walk through the forest. He was just as excited as they were, when we spotted not only wallabies and echidnas but also a koala in the trees. It was a lovely evening. He was a kind, gentle, quiet person. We will miss his hugs and his companionship, his sense of adventure and discovery and his willingness to join in.
