Diana was a constant positive throughout my life. She changed the face of Australian literary publishing with the utmost adamant and unwavering integrity and at the same time, was an incredibly warm and completely true iconic female figure. Knowing her was nothing but an inspiration and a joy, whilst talking to her was easy, fun, thoroughly interesting, never boring and always insightful- especially for a young and restless woman. Her adamant decision making and unwavering taste gave her insight more depth, as it came from a mind filled with true passion. As my mother's very close friend, she assisted and supported me in as many ways possible, which people of her status generally, and more often than not-"Simply don't have time for". She was never one of these. Diana always had time & attention for everyone. However- if she so happened to have less spare- due to her heavy schedule, her complete and utter attention was always there with you for your time- focussed entirely on you. She looked into your eyes and listened and after this, would then offer up her soothing, invaluable and critically radical advice. Diana has inspired me to publish the books around me that I feel need to be urgently accessible. I owe that completely to her existence and impact alone. She will be missed so greatly by the Morgan, Hattam & Mackinnon families, as will Les, her dear partner and magnificent artist, who similarly- meant the world to us. Di Gribble was a wonderful woman, a wonderful human being. We met in the 70s, she and Hilary McPhee starting their publishing company when I started mine (Virago, in London). We met in London, in Melbourne, at the unspeakable Frankfurt Book Fair, and I went to see them in their office in Melbourne with its creche and happy air. Di was a force of life, she created things and gave strength to those lucky enough to know her. And she could laugh with the best. Far too soon for everyone to lose her.
