Dale was much involved when in 1986 I was invited to undertake one of those seemingly perennial reviews of the GCCA. I wrote at the time: "The staff are a small band of dedicated people working in dowdy, overcrowded offices with inadequate and outdated equipment....To any visitor, the most amazing thing is that these three....are the GCCA. The Executive Officer (Dale) has done a marvellous job over the years of inadvertently creating the impression to the world at large that this national body had an army of helpers back at base, and then living with the consequences of that myth. With the best will in the world - and the will is there - the Executive Officer cannot be researcher, writer, editor, publisher, administrator, marketeer, entrepreneur and fund-raiser all at the same time. And yet that is what is being asked of him. He has worked hard and achieved much, but has been let down by many of the individuals and organisations who should have supported him and the GCCA.... It cannot go on, nor should it be allowed to do so." It didn't and the vibrant successor organisation of today is living testimony to the magnificent work of those pioneers of the '80s led by Dale. Jackie and I have such fond and vivid memories of his warm welcome, generous advice and unfailing courtesy. He was a true gentleman in the very best sense of that word. Dale “introduced” me to Australia when I worked at VUW (NZ), with an invitation in 1979 to a careers conference at Quambatook, Vic. He picked me up at the airport in his slightly battered Citroen Safari wagon apparently packed with old newspapers. The first impression was of a grizzled bear of a man with a huge well of warmth, good-humour and intellect. And that’s the way he was. When I moved to Oz in 1981 it was to join Shell; but I kept in contact with the careers scene and had odd occasions to meet Dale. When he moved on from GCCA in 1990, I expressed interest in the Executive Director job, but had to wait until 1992 to assume the role. Dale’s were huge shoes to fill as he had literally built the GCCA over two decades, and his legacy undoubtedly still pervades what is now GCA. We haven’t had much contact in recent years, but I’ve regarded Dale as a friend for over 30 years. Fondly remembered. Roger Bartley, WA.

Dale Harvey was a kind and supportive person to all who entered the field of Graduate Careers in his time at GCCA.
