Bernard Smith was the reason, in a roundabout way, that I ended up teaching in Australia. I studied with Charles Mitchell at Bryn Mawr College. Bernard Smith studied with Charles Mitchell at the Courtauld, and because of that contact, later sent several Australians to Bryn Mawr. I was honoured to have met Prof. Smith several times in Canberra, and was pleased to be able to share stories of Charles Mitchell with him. He was tremendously important for his intellectual work, for putting Australia and the South Pacific on the art historical map. His work will live on!
